Many clients reach out looking for a "seasoned therapist". Often what they mean is that they want someone who is older, has a lot of life experience and can understand what their going through.
I have had a number of clients tell me at the beginning of our work together or a few sessions in "I was actually looking for an older therapist, but I ended up here". This comment used to make me self-conscious, but now we just laugh together. In my experience, the clients who say this are often surprised by the process of therapy with me and the quick results that they have seen in their lives. They appreciate my gentle demeanor paired with my "call it like it is" attitude.
What clients may not realize when they look at my picture and see someone younger than them is that at least 1/3 of my clinical work has been with adults over 55. I have witnessed many people wrestle with issues of aging, losing a parent, retirement, being a caregiver, parenting a challenging adult child or being the adult child of a challenging parent. Now that I am paneled with Medicare I am seeing more and more older clients and some of them still say "I was looking for someone older". But it is usually the same clients that say our work together changed their life.
So if you have been searching for that "Seasoned Therapist" and not finding what you're looking for, give me a call. I might surprise you.
